THE DESERT SONG
SEPTEMBER 17 - 26th

NEPTUNE PRODUCTIONS takes a massive leap into adventure when The Red Shadow rides onto the Tweed Civic Centre stage mounted on an exotic grey Percheron Mare called ZERO. The September 17–26th production of Sigmund Romberg’s classical musical THE DESERT SONG, promises to be both entertaining, and a logistical and musical challenge. The Moroccan Desert will be the setting for comedy, romance and dancing by a local cast, orchestra and crew of 90, as well as “Zero and Fang”. Liza Beamish (Phantom of the Opera and Oz Opera) and Casey Fegan (Oklahoma and West Side Story) are joined by the magnificent bass voice of Lawrie Esmond, star Showboat’s Ol’ Man River, and JC Superstar. 20yr old Tammy Dundon in the role of the sultry native dancer Azuri, captivates Cptn. Paul Fontaine, Charles Cooper, in this revised production.
To those committed theatre lovers this may be your last opportunity to catch this amazing family operetta. The 2010 season has the addition of the horse, while Fang, in her first cross species role as Caramel the Camel, refuses to leave the stage. Oh dear, the old theatrical saying of “never act with animals or children” comes to mind – this production has both! Choreographer Sonja Holland, armed with some help from a recent Workshop with Nancy Hayes has included tap, exotic native, and Spanish dancing within the musical numbers. We have the four Tenors required for THE DESERT SONG, and have tightened the production, while maintaining the integrity of the music and story line. The use of a local horse from the Kamilaroi Performance Team based at Cabarita forms an exciting addition to the production.
