DIAL M FOR MURDER
A brilliant tale of passion, betrayal and ultimately…. murder!
Gold Coast Little Theatre kicks off its 2010 Diamond Anniversary season with a
gala first night for Frederick Knott’s brilliant thriller – Dial M for Murder -
on Saturday 30 January.
Well known for Alfred Hitchcock’s film version, starring Grace Kelly and Ray
Milland, the play premiered in 1952 on BBC television and later that year was
performed in London and New York. Knott’s work, which includes Wait until Dark,
tends to focus on women who innocently become the potential victims of sinister
plots.
There is just one setting in the stage play of Dial M for Murder - the living
room of a London apartment. In a claustrophobic and dark atmosphere, GCLT’s
gripping production is directed by Barry Gibson, noted for his skills both as a
director and award-winning actor.
Former tennis player, Tony Wendice (played by Andrew Trump) is convinced his
wife Sheila (Olivia Regent) is having an affair with Max Halliday (Nathan
Schulz). We watch mesmerised as Tony carefully plans what must surely be the
perfect murder. Every tiny detail is fiendishly well organised but unexpectedly,
things go awry.
Other players include Chris Roach as Captain Lesgate and Bob Fallon as the wily
Inspector Hubbard. The director and cast make sure that we are kept in suspense
right up to the last scene.
In 2010, Gold Coast Little Theatre makes history by celebrating sixty years of
providing top class entertainment to the local community. Productions selected
for the season have all been previously performed at the theatre to considerable
acclaim.
Dial M for Murder runs at the Gold Coast Little Theatre 21a Scarborough Street,
Southport from 30 January to 20 February 2010. It plays 8.00 pm Thursday to

SPECIAL INFORMATION SESSION and pre-audition reading of
Arsenic & Old Lace
2.00pm Saturday 6th March, in Molly's, at the rear of the main GCLT theatre
Gold Coast Little Theatre will hold auditions for this classic black
farce at 10.00am Sunday 28th March. The director, John Rees-Osborne, will hold
an information session in the form of an open reading in late February or early
March for actors who would like to know more about the play and the roles before
they commit to the actual audition. It’s a chance to read a few pages of
characters that interest you, or just to listen.
John says, ‘The session is not an audition or a performance for general public
entertainment. It’s for actors who are there to learn about the play. You won’t
be penalised at the audition if you don’t come to the reading - or given a role
just because you turned up at the reading!’
Audition
From 10.00am Sunday 28th March. Contact John Rees-Osborne for notes on
characters at 5578 9853 or
jre54165@bigpond.net.au
Brief synopsis
Drama critic Mortimer Brewster is engaged to marry Elaine, daughter of the
Reverend Harper. He has an eccentric brother who believes he is President Teddy
Roosevelt and digs locks for the Panama Canal in the cellar of the Brewster
home, but Mortimer discovers that his two spinster aunts, Abby and Martha, have
taken to poisoning lonely old men with home-made elderberry wine laced with
arsenic, while Teddy’s locks serve as graves for the aunts’ victims. Meanwhile
his older brother the homicidal maniac Jonathan returns unexpectedly after years
on the run, accompanied by his alcoholic accomplice, Dr. Einstein, who performs
plastic surgery to conceal Jonathan’s identity. Fearing madness runs in his
family, Mortimer wonders whether to break off his engagement, while coping with
his family and struggling to conceal the truth from Elaine and the local
Brooklyn cops. (11M, 3F)
