Valerie Miles 1937 - 2004
Valerie Miles, was tragically killed by a landslide in Vietnam in March 2004.
Valerie, a consummate performer, began her stage career as a child dancer in the Tivoli Theatre, Sydney
During the 1950's and 1960's Valerie danced in the professional Australian productions of "Lola Montez' & "Kismet",
with Pat Gregory's "Ice Follies" and had night club engagements in Rome and at Chequers in Sydney.
Valerie had strong ties with the Spotlight Theatrical Company where she performed in "Follies" in 2003.
Valerie was a popular figure amongst the Gold Coast Theatre set, known for her vigour, adventurous nature and her professionalism.

Deslye gave her first stage performance at 18. Her formal training included an education degree, her letters in speech and drama and speech therapy, and costume study in America. Before retirement Deslye lectured in speech and drama at QUT, Brisbane.
Deslye came to the coast in 1992 from her home city Brisbane, where she had been a long time member of the Brisbane Arts Theatre. She was involved in many productions at the Gold Coast Little Theatre taking on directing, acting and costumes, giving more of herself than ever before. She appeared in the short play "Iron Magnolias" and directed the one act play "Richard 111's Revenge". She directed Neil Simon's "Barefoot in the Park" and Nick Enright's "Daylight Saving".
Deslye was on the staff of the Expressions Dance Company in Brisbane. Her position was that of costume realisation. In her leisure time she travelled to Brisbane once a month to attend a luncheon at the Tivoli Theatre where she was a much loved member of the theatrical organisation titled "The Glugs' .
Deslye's final production was 'The Family" written by Brisbane's Jill Shearer. Jill attended the opening night of the production and was completely amazed by what she saw. This was one of Deslye's pet projects and she put everything into it she could under the difficult conditions she was living with at the time. Deslye was nominated for a prestigious Dolphin award at GCLT for her direction of "The family". She was always in demand around the theatre and one of her last engagements was to sew jodhpurs for Steven Tandy to wear as Beauregard in "Aunty Mame".

In the year 2000 she was presented with life membership at GCLT. She was also an active member of the management committee for some years where with other friends she enjoyed a glass of chardonnay.

Her last days were spent in Pindarra Hospital with her faithful dog at her side. She was farewelled by many friends and family in a moving service at the Uniting Church, Nerang.
 

 

 

Gerda Pinter 1915 - 2003

Gerda aged 24, born in Berlin travelled per "ORONSAY" arriving in Sydney on 23 May 1939 with her spouse Joseph.

1948 Joined the South Coast Women's Association
1950 Founder of Gold Coast Little Theatre, and until 1970 was adjudicator for Speech and Drama Events
1968 Gerda and Joseph became involved in the development of the Gold Coast Arts Centre
1970 Co-founded the Queensland School of Puppetry
1975-95 Served as a Lifeline counsellor
1981 Spouse Joseph died
1987 Helped form the Friends of the Arts Centre, becoming a life member
1988 Volunteer for Brisbane Expo88
1989 Named Gold Coast Citizen of the Year
1992 Awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to the Arts and the Community
1993 Volunteer worker for the Indy Car organization
1994 Bachelor of Fine Arts from Queensland University
1995-03 Involved and member, patron, of the Gold Coast Theatre Alliance Inc.
2000 Olympic Torch Bearer for the Sydney Olympics Torch relay around Australia
2001 Macintosh Island Pavilion was officially renamed The Gerda Pinter OAM Pavilion

Gerda Baruch born in 1915 in Berlin married a Romanian, Joseph Pinter born 24 May 1912, an engineer, and they both left Germany as Hitler was rising to power in 1939. They arrived in Sydney and settled in Melbourne where Gerda studied for Radiography and received her Diploma before moving north to the Gold Coast. Soon after arriving at the Gold Coast Gerda became heavily involved with the South Coast Women's Association in Lawson Street and formed a committee for a little theatre group, now known as Gold Coast Little Theatre. She was involved in adjudication for speech and drama events as they occurred on the Gold Coast. A very caring and active lady she devoted her time to the youth of the Gold Coast and as a Lifeline volunteer she gave much to the wider community. Her interest in the younger generations, and the future of our society, was evident with her commitment as a teacher of the University of the Third World and her involvement in the establishment of the Queensland Puppetry of Theatre.
