THE APPLETON LADIES POTATO RACE

By Melanie Tate

Directed by Louise Haggerty

SYNOPSIS: A comedy-drama full of laughs, heartache and big questions is coming to Tamborine Mountain Little Theatre in March 2022. This is an engaging story of 5 diverse women set in a small Australian country town written with panache and wit by author Melanie Tait (ABC and Guardian journalist) and first premiered to acclaim in 2019 at Sydney’s Ensemble Theatre. What starts as a feel-good story with the return of local girl from success in the big city rapidly develops into a close look at how modern Australia views and deals with (or not) the big issues of sexual preference, gender politics and choices, immigration, racism and the relevance of women - all captured through the prism of the local Potato Race at the “Show” where the men’s race prize is $1000, and the women’s is $200. The lines are drawn - and nobody’s feelings are spared.

Many of the themes seen clearly in the novel are present in Mary’s life including betrayal, neglect and isolation. Shelley herself takes the topics of nature, nurture, morality and the anomalies of life to create a piece of work that truly encapsulates what it’s like to be lonely as well as what it's like to be different in a cruel and dreary world.

STEEL MAGNOLIAS

By Robert Harling

By arrangement with ORiGiN™ Theatrical on Behalf of Samuel French, and Concord Theatricals Company

Directed by Barry Gibson

SYNOPSIS: Local director Barry Gibson presents to us a heart-warming story of love, wit and a whole lot of soul with Robert Harling’s classic 1987 play. Set in the US state of Louisiana, certified beauty expert Truvy Jones owns and spends her time in her local salon with 5 friends, - M’Lynn Eatenton and her confident daughter Shelby, the strong yet ill-tempered neighbour Ousier, kind- hearted companion Clairee Belcher and local newcomer and apprentice Anelle Dupuy. We see these strong independent women over the course of three years, sharing stories, gossiping and discussing their personal struggles within their families and their small Southern community. The history of the piece dates back to the late 80’s yet still holds up for modern audiences. As this piece was a personal requiem for playwright Robert Harling’s sister, it is no doubt a tearjerker and a sentimental piece of work for those who hold family close to their hearts. Gibson uses the perfect mix of comedy and dramatic elements to make light of serious situations throughout and also uses sassy satire to his advantage to make the show enjoyable for all. This show will touch the hearts of anyone who finds joy in the little things in life and wants a show with both laughter and sincerity.

THE COMMITTEE

Written and directed by Kate Tardy

SYNOPSIS: The Ashbrook Amateur Theatre Company is holding their monthly meeting with all committee members in attendance. It is a mixed group with various odd quirks and have only one thing in common, their love of all thing’s theatre. The President, a terrible actor who once made a TV commercial and thinks he is brilliant. The Vice President, a retired army officer suffering from early-stage dementia who sometimes dons full military uniform and attends the meeting as The Brigadier, which everyone goes along with. An overzealous treasurer, who is convinced there is pilfering going on in every area. The providore, a highly strung German woman with whom the Brigadier has a major problem, Social Director Vivienne, a borderline alcoholic who is always a little potted and The Secretary, Mavis, a quiet unassuming little woman causes the meeting to erupt into drama when it is noticed she has quietly passed away at some point and hasn’t taken the minutes. A dramatic but hilarious ending to the whole play.

SPOOKY DOG

By Eric Pilner and Amy Rhodes

By Arrangement with ORiGiN™ Theatrical, on Behalf of Samuel French, a Concord Theatricals Company

SYNOPSIS:  Comedic playwrights Eric Pilner and Amy Rhodes hilariously acclaimed stage play ‘Spooky Dog and the Teen-Age Gang Mysteries’ sheds a rather playful and uproarious light on the mystery gang we know from our childhoods, showing us our favourite characters, the drug induced hippie, the macho blonde, the dorky know-it-all, the feminine fashion diva and of course their speech impaired dog.  The numerous shenanigans  are definitely for MATURE AUDIENCES ONLY. Spooky dog and the gang embark on a mission to save a missing celebrity who has been mysteriously reported missing from a county fair. Throughout their endeavours they come face-to-face with comical characters, venture through dangerous and awkward situations and also struggle to come to terms with their burning sexual desires. These quirky teens are determined to solve the mystery and unmask the antagonist before the day is up, but for these meddling kids and their dog, that might be better said than done. The show will also be accompanied by a  9-piece band following the spooky gang, playing love music to further elevate the thrills and chills of the event and positioning the audience members as if they were watching the cartoon itself. The secret location of the show is still yet to be revealed to the public nearing the show's release; what we do know is that the play will be presented intimately inside the venue so as to match the eerie vibe of the play. Spooky dog and the rest of the gang will be hitting the stage with a season run from October 27th-31st 2022, just in time for Halloween!
