MACBETH By William Shakespeare Directed by Lydia Plim
SYNOPSIS: A brave Scottish general named Macbeth receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the Scottish throne for himself. He is then wracked with guilt and paranoia. Forced to commit more and more murders to protect himself from enmity and suspicion, he soon becomes a tyrannical ruler. The bloodbath and consequent civil war swiftly take Macbeth and Lady Macbeth into the realms of madness and death.
Murwillumbah Theatre Company presents Macbeth, from Fri March 10th to Sun
April 2nd at the Murwillumbah Civic Centre Auditorium. Macbeth, full title The Tragedie of Macbeth by William Shakespeare is thought to have been first performed in 1606. It is set in medieval Scotland Macbeth charts the bloody rise to power and tragic downfall of the warrior Macbeth. It dramatises the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power.
This is a mammoth production with twenty-five actors playing more than thirty four roles. They are supported by a large team of creatives headed by Co- Directors Lydia Plim and Bryanne Jardine and Directors’ Assistant, Meri Smith. This is the second time that MTC has produced a Shakespearian play, the last one being A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2014. This was also directed by Lydia Plim and was a great success.
