We eagerly look forward to the exciting productions Alessandra Theatre Company will bring to our community. Their inaugural show is *The Reunion* — a captivating comedy that promises laughter and reflection.
About the Play: The Reunion
The play relies on metatheatre or metadrama which is a dramatic genre that goes beyond drama of a traditional sort. In easier words it is a play within a play. It carries the aspects of a play that draw attention to its nature as drama, such as an actor portraying a character who is also an actor within the storyline of a play, or an actor directly addressing the audience and highlighting how drama is done as the play goes.
Some features of metatheatre/metadrama are a mixture of hassle and romance, and the use of exaggerated acting. Often metatheatre/metadrama encourages the audience interaction to promote engagement. Most characters in the play (within the play) are Melodrama characters and they are not meant to be particularly life-like.
The plot:
“The Reunion” is a comedy play about six friends who are going through mid-life crisis and living boring lives. They reunite after 35 years and decide to do something exciting together. The group took Drama in high school and performed a few plays. They now decide to join a theatre group trusting Drama will give them a more fulfilled and fun life. They find out their old Drama teacher Mr. Philip Balfour is retired and has passed on his theatre company to his son William Balfour who is now the director. William Balfour is directing a new play based on Acts 1 and 3 of Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The group of friends will be in the cast and will have the audience in stitches.
